The Bologna Process (also known as the Bologna System) is an agreement between close to 50 countries, mostly from Europe, for a single and common higher education system. It unifies university education into three cycles: Bachelors, Masters and Doctorates (PhD) and uses the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) to calculate student work load and to allow credits to be transferable between universities. This increases student mobility, i.e. students can move out to other countries to study and recognition of degrees also occurs. It also leads to comparable quality assurance regulations to improve education quality and to make qualifications easier to understand and accept to employers and institutions around the world.

Bologna Process is important because it sets a common and universally accepted system of higher education and so students can more easily enroll, take courses and work across countries. It makes qualifications easy to read and validate across the world by reducing degrees to three levels - Bachelor, Master and PhD - and by a common credit system (ECTS). This helps students to receive an international experience, improve the quality level in education by standardizing it and have more chances in jobs as employers will understand and be more confident in foreign degrees.

There are several advantages in the Bologna Process in terms of improving higher education through its flexibilization and international integration. It also simplifies degrees to a level of Bachelor, Master and PhD degrees, and this helps to better understand and compare the degrees in different countries, and enable students to seek further education or work in other countries. The ECTS credit system will allow student to carry credit with him/her meaning that, with the system in place, students can choose to study in a different country without fear of losing credits. Further, it promotes students' mobility and exchange program, which offers a valuable experience to the students in terms of global operation. In addition, it improves quality education through bringing into place a set of specific requirements and assessment methods, ensuring the qualifications are to a higher quality and more accessible to understand. Finally, it is overall benefiting employability and creating a global competitive workforce.

The Universities in Kurdistan-Iraq, in general, and Zakho University, in particular, are starting to practice the Bologna-like version in their 3 cycles of higher Education programs, i.e., the Bachelor study program, the Master degree and the Doctoral degree (PhD).

This web site will be the Course management System for the Bologna process at Zakho University. At the same time, it provides the catalog to all Universities in Kurdistan region in order to start Bologna Process and to manage their Study program, concurrently.
